Whereas shaving and waxing were common previously, the ready availability of permanent hair removal systems now makes the need for regular maintenance a thing of the past. And by avoiding shaving and waxing, the incidence of painful ingrown hairs is virtually eliminated.
Both IPL and laser hair removal work through the process of hair follicle destruction. The devices emit light that is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, which then kills off the hair follicles. Only hairs in the actively growing Anagen phase are affected, so a series of treatments (usually 5-6 with an interval of 6-8 weeks between each treatment) are needed.
Unlike IPL for facial rejuvenation which can only be done for lighter skin tones, IPL hair removal can be used safely in all skin types. Ideally, sun tanning should be avided during the treatment process to avoid the risk of burns.
IPL is fast and relatively pain-free. Treating the underarm area takes less than 3 minutes to complete! Larger areas, such as the legs, will naturally take significantly longer. Pain factor depends on the treated area, with the bikini area being the most sensitive. However, the discomfort level is pretty much equivalent to waxing, and the latter requires lifelong maintenance, whereas IPL permanently kills off over 90% of the hair follicles.
