Slimming Centre or Aesthetic Clinic?

by Christine Cheng on Feb 9, 2010 at 8:44 PM

Slimming centres have appeared in every corner of Singapore over the last few years. Their ads are all over the newspapers, magazines, everywhere! The pressure to be slim has never been greater!

I remember booking into Marie France many years ago, soon after my return from the UK. It was virtually free to try this slimming treatment. Fortunately, I couldn’t make it. I was naively unaware about the hard selling tactics and dubious technology in those days. Well, it was 10 years ago… And things have certainly changed since then.

For a start, there are many more players in the market now. And the before/after pictures and celebrity endorsements are very tempting! Prices too! Twenty sessions for under $500. What a bargain!

What the innocent consumer doesn’t realise is that these offers are just to tempt clients into the slimming centre, then the sales consultant locks the door and hard sells packages valued at $5000 upwards. If results are not obtained, more hard selling ensues.

The person recommending the treatment also doesn’t do the actual therapy. They recommend based on perceived client budget, not on what is best for the person in front of them. Very often, they may know very little about the treatments at all!

So what about Aesthetic clinics? More expensive? Possibly, but not always. Yes, you’ll have to pay to see the doctor, but the treatments are then truly tailored to your requirements. And although the packages may seem to cost more than what’s seen in the newspapers, the price quoted doesn’t have any hidden costs or hard selling associated with it. And may often be half of what you really pay in a slimming centre.

Plus, you don’t waste time with hot wraps, cold wraps, skin pinching massages in a clinic. It’s clear cut technology at its best, zapping the unwanted fat away, either all over or in targeted areas.

One thing to note is that many aesthetic clinics do not have a full range ofslimming treatments. They may have one or two options, which may suffice, but many doctors will go straight for liposuction. This may not be the best option for everybody, as all surgery comes with some degree of risk.

So why is Simply Aesthetic different? Firstly, I’m greedy and love eating! I’m always looking for ways to keep the excess food off my waist and hips! So I’ve collected a whole series of slimming machines over the past 3 years. The good ones are flogged hard with great results. The less effective ones are relegated to the storeroom, never to see light of day again.

I also take the time to talk to each new client, finding out what their individual concerns are, then discussing the options available at great length. We go into how each machine works, possible results, all the benefits, plus cost of course. Wherever possible, we allow the clients to try the treatments once before they make up their mind. And no hard selling. That’s a promise. And I’m always available to provide additional support and advice anytime during the treatment program.

But ultimately it’s each individual’s choice… Slimming Centre or Aesthetic Clinic? And for the latter, Simply Aesthetic?

  2. An interesting article from the Straits Times November 17 2009: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_455405.html. Poor lady was burnt by a strange slimming technique that involved setting an alcohol soaked towel placed on her tummy on fire. Not surprisingly, she was burnt!
